Curtis Thorn Q&A

Curtis Thorn is a defender for South Georgia Tormenta FC in the United Soccer League 1. His journey in the USA started at Nova Southeastern University, where he played for 2 years, and was named to the Fall SSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll in both seasons. I caught up with Curtis earlier this week to talk about life as a professional footballer in the US, his advice for young footballers, and to reflect on how Tom Nutter Soccer Scholarships helped him get to where he is now.

What are you enjoying most about playing for South Georgia Tormenta FC?

The environment. Being amongst top professionals is something I’ll never be complacent about. Also, we have a great group of guys so the day-to-day is something I’m thoroughly enjoying.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue a soccer career in the USA as you have?

Simple… DO IT! It’s the best thing I’ve done. The opportunities that present themselves out here are endless. Tom gave me an insight into all of this and I thought it was too good to be true. He was right with everything he said!

Who is the most influential person in your life?

My dad. Me and him are like two peas in a pod. I do everything for him. Knowing I perform on a Saturday while he is watching, is why I always prepare myself correctly.

What was your biggest takeaway from your time at Nova Southeastern University?

Don’t skip steps. My dream was always to become a professional soccer player. I didn’t think about the foundations you have to build as a player on and off the pitch to prepare yourself for the professional environment.

How did Tom Nutter Soccer Scholarships help you to get where you are now ?

As mentioned earlier, Tom had helped me massively, giving me an overview of what America could present for me. I have recommended him to a lot of my friends too as he does extremely well with players and connections that could lead somewhere.

What’s one of the biggest sacrifices you have had to make in life to become a successful pro player?

It’s a 24 hour a day job. I don’t think people realize how quick the game has progressed. There are some crazy athletes out here nowadays so the small margins are exceptionally important to allow yourself the best chance to keep up or become better.

Would you change anything about the route you took to get to where you are now? If so, what?

I’m a big believer that someone deserves to be in their position. Of course, now I’ve had a year in the pro game, I just want to get better and better and make a few step ups. I’ll continue to work hard until this comes around.
